JAHORINA, 19.11.2017. – How to report responsibly about gender-based violence, which are the most frequent forms of violence against women and girls in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and how this social problem is addressed through the legal framework and international standards are some of the topics that will be discussed during a three-day workshop for students “Reporting on the topic of gender-based violence”, which started today in Jahorina.

Participants of the Academy, 27 students from the Department of Journalism and Communication from Bosnia and Herzegovina Public and Private Faculties, for the next three days will listen to lectures by media professionals, activists and representatives of public institutions and actively participate in group and individual exercises.

The first day of the Academy, the lecture was held by Ljiljana Zurovac, executive director of the Press and Online Media Council in BiH, who spoke about journalistic ethics in the context of reporting on gender-based violence and on the role of the media when it comes to highlighting the problem of violence against women and girls.

“Previous experience shows how this topic is reported only when it comes to the final outcome, that is, to the final violence, murder or punishment for committing violence,” Zurovac said, adding that journalists and the media are obliged to work more on the general awareness of the problem of violence against women and girls in a way to keep on reporting and breaking taboos and prejudices.

The Journalists’ Academy in Jahorina gathered participants from Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla, Ljubuski, Visegrad, Istocno Sarajevo, Mostar, Pale and Bugojno, and is being held within the project “Turn Off Violence – Media Against Violence Against Women”, implemented by the Association / Association of BH Journalists with the support of UN Women’s Office in BiH and the Swedish International Development and Cooperation Agency (Sida).
