Prizes for journalism awarded for the best poverty stories

PRISTINA 15.10.2018 – The UN Kosovo Team and the Association of Journalists of Kosovo announced the winners of the Journalism poverty prize 2018, which marked this year the 13th edition.

In marking of the International Day of Eradication of Poverty, and to promote an increased debate around the issues and causes of poverty in Kosovo, the jury selected five winners on the following categories.

Merita Nerizi won the category Best Short Video story with the news story “Police saves three kids in Gjilan”, broadcast by KLAN KOSOVA.

Kaltrina Rexhepi Dragusha, won the category Best TV Documentary with the reportage “Child Mother”, broadcast on RTK1.

Majlinda Doda won the Best Audio Story with the radio story ““Poverty and Migration” broadcast by Radio Kosova.

Besa Kalaja & Leonida Molliqaj, won the Best Written Story with the reportage “Don’t grow old!”, published on the portal Preportr

Jeton Sopa, won the category Best Photography with the photography “In the middle of Pristina, eight poor family members live homelessly”, published on Indexonline.

The UN Development Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Ulrika Richardson said that poverty is the biggest challenge and the people living in poverty are marginalised group.

“Journalists play an important role here because poverty has to do with human rights. Therefore, journalism and media are the voice of people that live in poverty,” said Richardson.

President of AJK, Gentiana Begolli – Pustina stated that poverty is a systematic problem in Kosovo and media need to tackle that every day. She added that even journalists are challenged with social problems at their working place.

“Journalists continue to be guardians of the critical needs of our society, through their work its presented the heavy economic and social situation for individuals and families in Kosovo,” said Begolli-Pustina.

A lecture was also delivered by Eoghan Sweeney, the Global Training Director of First Draft – a non-profit organisation, based at the Shorenstein Center, about “Misinformation and disinformation: The risks facing media”.
