Threats by notary Anila Haxhiu against journalist Odeta Gjevori of the investigative show “Stop” are alarming for the safety of journalists in Albania.

Last evening, the program STOP, an investigative show where Odeta Gjevori works as a journalist, aired some recordings from the court session between Notary Anila Haxhiu, and journalist Gjevori. The notary Haxhiu is seen using threatening and denigrating language towards journalist Gjevori.

It is unacceptable for a public official to have such an approach towards the media, especially without any reflection from the notary, who was previously sued by the journalist after being assaulted by the notary while performing her duties. The threatening language towards the journalist, “either me or you in this world,” was used in the courtroom, in the presence of the prosecutor of the case and the defendant’s lawyer. Read the case here.

The lack of institutional reaction only further encourages acts of vandalism against journalists.

The Safe Journalists Network expresses full solidarity and support for our colleague Odeta Gjevori and calls on the justice authorities to act without delays and efficiently in all cases where media workers report threats to their safety. The Association of Journalists of Albania has also reacted to the case.
