Trade Union of Media of Montenegro has strongly condemned the attack by one of the accused members of a criminal organization, Predrag Veljić, on Libertas Press photojournalist Savo Prelević.
TUMM expressed concern that violent incidents targeting media workers continue to occur.
“We reiterate that attacks on media professionals are absolutely unacceptable, as they represent a direct assault on media freedom and the public’s right to be informed,” the statement reads.
Furthermore, TUMM welcomed the decision of the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica to initiate proceedings against Veljić, following a recommendation from the Supreme State Prosecutor.
The Union has called on the authorities to see this process through to the end and impose appropriate sanctions.
“TUMM will continue to monitor this case and insist on the consistent application of the law to protect media workers. We urge the authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of media professionals and enable them to work without obstruction,” the statement concludes.
