The Montenegrin police (Sector for the Fight Against Crime) sent a letter to M Portal, its editor Danica Nikolić, and a journalist Kaćuša Krsmanović regarding the article “Šćepanović and Šaranović Created the Lists of Undesirables”, which they had republished from the E TV portal.

In the letter, the police requested that M Portal “provide a statement regarding the circumstances” of who allowed the journalist to access and photograph the telegram referenced in their article. The police also inquired whether, before deciding to publish the telegram, they had consulted officials from the relevant state authorities and, if so, which ones.

Nikolić stated that she would not disclose her sources and described the request as an attempt to pressure and intimidate the media and journalists.

ETV reported that neither Montenegro’s Criminal Procedure Code nor the Law on Internal Affairs recognizes the legal concept of a “request for a statement,” as formulated in the police letter
