The Police Directorate of Montenegro filed a misdemeanor complaint against journalist and writer Brano Mandić for publishing a column on October 18, 2024, in which he criticized the public speech of the University of Montenegro professor Aleksandar Stamatović.

Mandić criticized the professor’s sexist remark towards a TV Adria show host, in which he commented on the inscription on the journalist’s t-shirt, saying that he “liked what is underneath and above it.” This behavior was met with strong public condemnation but no adequate response from the University of Montenegro.

The Police Directorate of Montenegro stated that, acting on Stamatović’s complaint, they filed a misdemeanor charge for insults in Mandić’s authored column.

Civil society organizations reacted to this action by the Police Directorate, urging them to abandon the procedure, emphasizing the lack of understanding of journalism and journalistic genres.

A hearing is scheduled for April 16.
