Copyright infringement is a growing challenge in the Albanian media landscape, with several outlets facing accusations of violating intellectual property laws. ACROMAX, a company that monitors copyright violations for its clients, including major media outlets, has recently reported multiple infringements by CNA, a media outlet that transitioned from online to TV. ACROMAX claims CNA has repeatedly used content without proper attribution, leading to the closure of CNA’s Facebook and Instagram pages in late September 2024.

CNA argues that ACROMAX’s actions are politically motivated, citing ACROMAX’s ties to Top Channel (one of the largest media in Albania with a national license) and claiming that its critical coverage of Top Channel and the Mayor of Tirana has made it a target. Allegations about CNA’s financial backing have also surfaced, which may influence its reporting.

The Albanian Media Council reacted promptly, stating that the closure of social networks without a court decision clearly violates freedom of information, freedom of expression, and freedom of speech.

ACROMAX has flagged other media outlets for similar violations (like Newsbomb.al), indicating that copyright infringement is a broader issue. The situation calls for legal clarification on the legitimacy of ACROMAX’s actions and CNA’s claims of bias, along with greater transparency regarding media ownership and funding. Raising awareness of copyright laws and media ethics is essential to addressing these challenges.
