PODGORICA, 26.07.2019. – Media content in the central news programs of electronic media is mostly created by women journalists and editors, while men are most often seen as their main interlocutors and sources of information, showed the Analysis of Visibility of Women and Men in the central news programs of national televisions done by the Agency for Electronic Media (AEM).
“Bearing in mind the results of the analysis, women are dominantly employed in the journalistic profession. Almost 60 percent of published information was produced by women in the observed week”, it is said in the Analysis.
The aim of this analysis, which was conducted from January 21 to 27, is to identify the authors and main interlocutor in television news, and whether the participation of women and men in the news packages varies depending on the topic being processed.
The information includes news programs of four television broadcasters with national coverage: The first program of the Television of Montenegro (RTCG1), TV Vijesti, TV Prva and TV Nova M. In total, 28 news programs and 264 news reports were analyzed.
As stated in the document, out of the 28 central newscasts, women edited 21 (75%), while men were editors of seven of them (25%).
“With the exception of Television of Montenegro, journalists in the observed media are predominantly women, but women are also editors and more often appear as recognizable faces (leaders) of central informative shows in relation to men”, explained from the AEM.
The regulator’s analysis showed that the engagement of women in relation to men was at least twice as high on all topics, with the exception of sports.
“Despite the widely held view that women journalists cover the so-called “softer” topics, the analysis has shown that the engagement of women journalists in relation to men is three times higher in political and issues such as violence and crime, or double regarding economic issues”, address the report.
Sport is, they add, the only thematic area where men were authors of all news and reports.
On the other hand, the conducted analysis showed that there is a significant difference in the representation of women and men in the central informative shows as interlocutors, or relevant experts on certain themes.
“In total, out of 402 statements taken from relevant interviewers, on all four monitored TVs, only 83 statements were taken from women (20%), while men were relevant interlocutors in 319 cases (80%)”, states the Analysis.
From AEM, they explain that the biggest difference in the number of sources in relation to gender is seen in topics violence and crime, the economy and those concerning the sphere of politics.
“On these topics, women as professional interlocutors appear in 10% of cases”, the document reveals.
They add that in the reports dedicated to other topics, women as interlocutors are involved, at best, twice less than men. The exception is education, which is the only thematic area in which there were more women interlocutors (one statement more than men).
