The SafeJournalists Network strongly condemns the new death threats sent to Marko Vidojković, author of the show Dobar loš zao (DLZ) and columnist for the daily Danas, via the social network Facebook.
Vidojković received messages in his inbox from the account “Simic Dobri”, in which, along with insults, he was directly threatened with violence and being set on fire.
“I f*ck your Ustasha mother.” ” and “You stinking piece of sh*t, come to Serbia, f*ck your scumbag mother. You are going to recognize Kosovo? You are going to sell my house, my home? I will set you on fire too, you Ustasha p*ssy. ” were the messages Vidojković received on Facebook.
The threats have been reported to the Special Prosecutor’s Office for High-Tech Crime.
Vidojković told SafeJournalists that the threats followed after he mentioned the possibility of changing the Constitution in the show Dobar loš zao.
“After I mentioned the possibility of changing the Constitution in DLZ, on Wednesday morning TV Informer launched a smear campaign that lasted about two hours. During that media abuse, the host and guests described me as a traitor who wants to take Kosovo away from Serbia. As usual in such situations, the most vile insults followed in the comments on social media, and then a threat of being set on fire appeared, sent to me by an unknown person as a direct message on Facebook. I reported the threat, the prosecutor’s office called me quickly, but I do not expect the police to look for the perpetrator, because the last time they did that in my case was in 2021,” Vidojković said.
Such messages represent a serious threat to Marko Vidojković’s safety and are yet another indicator of the dangerous environment in which journalists and media workers in Serbia operate, especially those exposed to continuous hate campaigns, targeting and threats on social media.
We recall that Marko Vidojković and his colleague Nenad Kulačin are among the most exposed media workers in Serbia when it comes to death threats and threats of violence received via social media. Despite numerous reports and public warnings, the lack of an efficient response by the institutions further encourages perpetrators and sends a message of impunity.
The SafeJournalists Network calls on the Special Prosecutor’s Office for High-Tech Crime and the police to urgently identify the person behind the account from which the threats were sent, conduct an efficient investigation and take all measures prescribed by law so that the perpetrator is prosecuted.
Every direct threat requires a swift and decisive response from the competent authorities, because impunity in such cases further endangers the safety of journalists and media freedom in Serbia.
The SafeJournalists Network will continue to monitor this case and inform relevant domestic and international stakeholders about it.
Every attack on journalists is an attack on media freedom and democratic values.
