Representatives of Montenegro’s media community, Petar Komnenić, journalist and host of the TV programme Načisto, and Vuk Maraš, Executive Director of BIRN Montenegro, have been banned from entering Serbia.

Komnenić learned of the entry ban on 30 June, while leaving Serbia, when border police informally informed him that his name had been flagged in the system and that he would no longer be allowed to enter the country.

Maraš was informed of the ban on 6 July, while travelling from Podgorica to Rome via Belgrade. During a lengthy layover, he intended to leave the airport and go into the city. However, during passport control, Serbian border police detained him for approximately one and a half hours before serving him with a decision refusing him entry into Serbia.

Both Komnenić and Maraš believe that the decisions are part of Serbia’s announced “reciprocal measures”, introduced after the Montenegrin authorities banned Dragan J. Vučićević, owner and editor-in-chief of the pro-government tabloid Informer, from entering Montenegro on 26 June. Vučićević was barred from entering the country after using Informer TV to insult Montenegrin state institutions, describe them as “anti-Serb”, and compare them to Croatian fascists from the Second World War. Following the ban on Vučićević, the President of Serbia announced that reciprocal measures would be introduced against Montenegro.

At this stage, it remains unclear whether any other journalists or media workers from Montenegro have also been banned from entering Serbia as part of these so-called reciprocal measures.
