Albania: Administrator of Online Media Portal Arrested on Suspicion of Extortion

The Safe Journalists Network (SJN) notes the arrest of the administrator of an online media portal, Elio Laze, following a police operation conducted in Tirana.
According to information released by the State Police, the individual was apprehended on suspicion of demanding 5,000 euros from a public administration employee in exchange for removing previously published articles from the portal he administered. Authorities have indicated that the case concerns alleged “coercion through threats for the surrender of property” and “fraud.” The case has been referred to the Prosecutor’s Office of Tirana for further investigation.

Based on publicly available information, the allegations relate to suspected criminal conduct and do not appear to concern journalistic reporting carried out in the public interest or the legitimate exercise of freedom of expression. Journalism serves the public by informing citizens, scrutinising power, and contributing to democratic accountability. SJN stresses that invoking media activity cannot shield unlawful behavior if proven before a court of law.

Freedom of expression protects critical reporting, investigative scrutiny, satire, and opinion, including speech that may be controversial or uncomfortable. It does not extend to acts of extortion or coercion for personal gain. Drawing this distinction clearly is essential both to safeguard media freedom and to preserve public trust in journalism.

SJN recalls that all individuals are entitled to the presumption of innocence and to due process guarantees in accordance with Albanian law and international human rights standards. SJN will continue to monitor the case.
