EESC Publishes Report on Fundamental Rights and Rule of Law in Albania: Key Reflections for Media Freedom and Journalists’ Safety
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has released its official Report on the state of fundamental rights and the rule of law in Albania, following the visit of the EESC Fundamental Rights and Rule of Law Group to Tirana on 2–3 April 2025. The delegation met with representatives of civil society, journalists, and institutions to assess developments and remaining challenges in Albania’s democratic environment.

SafeJournalists was among the actors consulted during the mission and contributed evidence on the situation of media freedom, working conditions, and safety of journalists.

The EESC report highlights persistent challenges in Albania’s rule of law and media environment, noting a shrinking space for independent journalism, high levels of political and economic influence over media outlets, and ongoing barriers to accessing public information.

The full report, including observations from the Albanian authorities, is available here.

SafeJournalists welcomes the publication of the report and will continue to work with partners in Albania the region and EU to monitor developments, document violations, and advocate for a democratic environment where journalists can work freely and safely.
