Journalist and member of the Istria Branch of the Croatian Journalists’ Association, Nevena Trgovčić, became the target of insults, hate speech and threats on social media over an interview she had conducted six months earlier in the KulturIstra portal’s podcast with Irena Boljunčić, the organiser of the International Street Wizards Festival in Istria. The campaign was triggered by a social media post published by Ivan Vidović, Most’s coordinator for Istria and a member of the Umag City Council, who selectively extracted excerpts from the old interview and presented them as alleged evidence of an ideological agenda that, in his view, should be opposed.
Following the post, a social media campaign was launched in which the journalist’s professional work was portrayed as part of the alleged ideological agenda. The post generated numerous comments containing hate speech, dehumanising language and calls for violence directed at the interviewee, while the journalist herself was subjected to public discrediting and accusations solely for conducting the interview.
