A meeting of the working group monitoring the implementation of the protocol for the protection of journalists and other media professionals was held at the Electronic Media Agency, within the framework of the National Coordination Committee for the implementation of measures from the Action Plan for the Development of Culture and Media, as well as the Council of Europe and OSCE campaigns for the safety of journalists.
The meeting focused on the implementation of the agreement and two protocols for the protection of journalists, signed by the Ministry of the Interior and two professional journalist associations — the Croatian Journalists’ Association (HND) and the Trade Union of Croatian Journalists (SNH).
These include:
-
The Protocol on the conduct of police officers, journalists, and media workers at public gatherings of public interest, and
-
The Protocol on police procedures when learning of a criminal offence committed against a journalist or other media professional while performing their professional duties.
These protocols require the police to continuously plan and carry out necessary activities to ensure the safe and unhindered work of journalists and media professionals.
Marina Mandić, Media Coordinator in the Cabinet of the Minister of the Interior, presented the results of the monitoring of both protocols for the entire year 2024. In cooperation with editorial offices and journalist associations, further concrete activities were agreed upon to inform journalists about these protocols directly within newsrooms. Several such initiatives have already been implemented. There was also discussion of informing local journalists in coordination with police departments across Croatia.
The meeting was moderated by Jasna Vaniček-Fila, the national coordinator for the implementation of the Council of Europe and OSCE campaigns for strengthening the safety of journalists, and a member of the Council for Electronic Media.
Alongside Marina Mandić, participants included:
-
Hrvoje Zovko, President of the Croatian Journalists’ Association (CJA)
