Without adequate working conditions, there can be no free and quality journalism. Recognizing this fundamental truth, the Center Science and Innovation for Development (SCiDEV), led by Dr. Blerjana Bino, who also serves as a researcher for the SafeJournalists Network, together with the Association of Journalists of Albania (AGSH) and the Union of Journalists and Media Workers, held a constructive coordination meeting with the State Labour and Social Services Inspectorate.
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between journalist organizations and the Inspectorate to improve the working conditions of journalists in Albania, a vital component of ensuring media freedom and safety.
During the discussion, the parties reached consensus on several key priorities:
- Raising awareness on the importance of unionization as a means of empowering journalists to advocate for their rights collectively;
- Educating media professionals on the role, competences, and mechanisms of the Inspectorate, to improve reporting and complaint procedures;
- Enhancing dialogue and sustained institutional cooperation, including regular communication and exchange of information between the involved organizations and the Inspectorate.
Notably, the Inspectorate expressed its commitment to developing and refining a specific inspection methodology tailored to the media sector, taking into account its unique challenges, complexity, and sensitivity.
The SafeJournalists Network welcomes the proactive and open approach of the State Labour Inspectorate and commends their willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue in support of journalists’ rights. Strengthening legal protections and enforcement mechanisms is crucial to safeguarding journalists and ensuring a media environment where professionalism, independence, and dignity are upheld.
We will continue to monitor and support this collaboration, advocating for structural improvements that ensure safe and fair working conditions for all media workers in Albania.
