Four organizations from the Croatian media industry—the Croatian Digital Publishers Association (HUDI), Association of Publishers of Informational Publications (UNIP), Croatian Employers’ Association – Newspaper Publishers Association (HUP-UNI), and Society for the Protection of Journalistic Copyright (DZNAP)—have signed the Guidelines on the Reuse of Media Content.
This document represents a joint regulatory framework governing how Croatian publishers reuse and share digital media content among themselves. The Guidelines were initiated by HUDI with the aim of promoting professionalism, ethics, and fair practices in digital journalism. With the inclusion of UNIP, HUP-UNI, and DZNAP, the document has gained broader industry legitimacy and scope.
By adopting this document, the Croatian media landscape is taking an important step toward a more structured and sustainable digital ecosystem. DZNAP has called on all its members to adhere to the Guidelines when reusing copyrighted content from colleagues in other media outlets.
The Society for the Protection of Journalistic Copyright was established in November 2007 to ensure the collective protection of journalists’ copyright. Its goals include bringing together journalist-authors, protecting journalistic copyrights, advancing shared professional interests, and improving the social and material status of journalists.
In accordance with the Law on Associations and the Copyright and Related Rights Act, the Society operates as a professional association or delegates certain copyright protection activities to specialized copyright agencies through contracts.
At the request of individual authors, the Society can also organize the protection of individual journalistic copyrights, particularly by monitoring unauthorized reproduction and distribution of journalistic works. Funds for the distribution of copyright remuneration are collected from press clipping agencies that provide their users with newspaper articles and other media content.
A portion of the revenue generated by such press clipping agencies belongs to copyright holders—journalists and publishers.
The President of DZNAP is Goran Penić, and the Secretary General is Marko Špoljar. Members of the Presidency, which manages the Society’s work, include Jurica Galoić, Marina Karlović Sabolić, Daniel Kasap, Ivan Pandžić, Ana Raić, Sanjin Strukić, Sabina Tandara Knezović, Darko Tomaš, and Tihana Tomičić.
