The Director of Montenegro’s National Security Agency (NSA), Ivica Janović, has filed a criminal complaint against investigative journalists of the Centre for Investigative Journalism of Montenegro (CIN-CG), Andrea Perišić and Đurđa Radulović.

Janović filed the complaint on 2 June against Perišić, Radulović, and unidentified persons in connection with an investigative article in which the journalists examined the NSA’s recruitment practices and the employment of officials who had allegedly been assessed as posing a security risk.

The journalists learned of the criminal complaint on 17 June, when they were summoned to the police to give statements. They were informed that the complaint had been filed on suspicion of the criminal offence of disclosing classified information, which under Montenegro’s Criminal Code carries a prison sentence of between one and eight years.

During their police interviews, Perišić and Radulović were also asked to disclose their sources, which they refused to do.
