The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has made a series of dangerous and unfounded claims in a statement about the alleged involvement of certain local and national media outlets, as well as the European Union, in the current protests in Serbia.
The statement reads: “The current unrest in Serbia, with active participation from the youth, largely represents the product of subversive activities by the European Union and member states of this alliance.” It also claims: “According to the obtained data, Serbian news portals such as FoNet, RAM Network, Vreme, Južne vesti, Slobodna reč, Boom93, Podrinske, Freemedia, Inđija, SOinfo, FAR, Storyteller, as well as the non-governmental organization Link, receive significant financial support through NGOs connected to Brussels.”
Journalists from the aforementioned media outlets in Serbia are professionally reporting on the protests, and it is their duty to provide the public with accurate and complete information on significant events. However, statements like these, which insinuate foreign conspiracies without evidence, put journalists and media outlets directly at risk. After the release of this statement, colleagues reached out to NUNS expressing concerns for their safety and feeling additional pressure in performing their duties.
Spreading conspiracy theories and disinformation not only diverts attention from the real reasons why citizens are taking to the streets, but also jeopardizes the public’s fundamental right to be accurately and impartially informed. Journalists are already facing attacks, threats, and pressure, and such statements further complicate their work, creating an atmosphere of insecurity and distrust.
Following this, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić thanked the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) for the “information” about the alleged preparation for a violent takeover of power on the anniversary of the tragedy at the Novi Sad railway station and announced that Serbian security services would “further contact” the SVR regarding these claims.
