Journalist of the daily Vijesti, Jelena Jovanović, filed a complaint with the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica on 9 June following another series of threats and insults directed at her on social media.
The campaign against Jovanović was once again initiated by the social media profile “Niko Kater”, which, among other things, labelled her a traitor of Montenegro, an associate of the Škaljari criminal clan*, and a disgrace to journalism. The attacks followed her appearance on a television programme in which she stated that she could not and would not reveal her sources regarding information obtained from Sky ECC communications.
“Jelena has buttered her head, she won’t say who provides her with information! Of course, we all know who it is, and his head is buttered too”, Kater wrote, among other comments.
Other social media users subsequently joined the campaign, calling her the most derogatory names and accusing her of “plunging families into mourning” through her reporting.
“There is so much malice in her, only she knows. A filthy drug addict, an associate of the Škaljari clan. How many honest people she has smeared and how many young men she has sent to their deaths with her articles. God will judge her in the end, as He surely will,” wrote Krsto Kukuličić, whose comment was not the only offensive message he posted.
Another user, Milan Đukanović, claimed that Jovanović “hates her own origins”, while Željko Prelević called on her to reveal “which clan bought her two apartments”.
The journalist had already reported the same instigator to the authorities over similar incidents in early October and again in December last year.
*Škaljari criminal clan is a Montenegrin organized crime group originating from the coastal town of Kotor
