PODGORICA, 08 December 2025 – Any form of violence, threats, or harassment against journalists is unacceptable and has no place in a democratic society, the Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Montenegro said, commenting on the threats made against Vijesti journalist Nikola Saveljić while he was reporting from Botun.
Two Botun residents warned Saveljić on December 6 not to “provoke with questions” and said that if he continued, he will “end up badly, not those who sent him.” They did this after Saveljić, reporting from a local protest, asked a question to the leader of the Democratic People’s Party, Milan Knežević, who compared the journalist—after a follow-up question—to his aunt who “asks and then gives the answers herself.”
Responding to Vijesti’s inquiry, the EU Delegation reiterated that public officials must refrain from inappropriate political interference, including harsh public criticism directed at media representatives.
“Media freedom is a fundamental democratic value of the European Union and a key element of Montenegro’s EU accession process,” they added.
