President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić and the Speaker of the National Assembly Ana Brnabić targeted journalists from N1 and Nova S television in their public appearances.
Namely, the news about the detention of war veterans suspected of planning to overthrow the constitutional order and attack President Vučić served as a повод for the country’s top officials to escalate pressure on the N1 newsroom once again. The trigger for the attacks was the fact that N1, alongside the statement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, also reported the statement of the lawyer representing the detained individuals as part of its professional coverage. The lawyer said that the reason for the detention was “intimidation ahead of the upcoming gathering on March 15.”
Speaker of the National Assembly Ana Brnabić, commenting on the matter on the social network X, made accusations that represent dangerous labeling of the media and further fuel an atmosphere of public targeting. Among other things, Brnabić wrote: “What kind of monstrous relativization is this and an even more monstrous distortion of reality… (in)direct protection of those who want to harm the President of Serbia and his CHILDREN… Horrifying. And deserving of every condemnation.”
At the same time, President Aleksandar Vučić stated in a public appearance: “…they should have beaten my child to death and slaughtered him… These are lies that they could have read somewhere. And where – you can guess.” He repeated accusations that “lies are being spread” on N1 and Nova S television and added that he has had “a thousand reasons” to shut them down so far, but did not want to do so.
