December 22, 2025 – Journalist Uglješa Bokić received a summons from the Novi Sad police to report to the Novo Naselje police station on Thursday, December 25, 2025, for questioning at the request of the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office. According to the information provided, the questioning was scheduled in connection with the publication of parts of an official police report on the Danas news portal, concerning the detention of Novi Sad lawyer Nemanja Aleksić in early April of this year. The Prosecutor’s Office ordered the police to question the journalist regarding the circumstances of a criminal complaint filed by Aleksić against an unknown person for the criminal offense of Violation of the Confidentiality of Proceedings.
This represents pressure on the journalist and the newsroom, as the protection of sources is one of the fundamental principles of free journalism and a right guaranteed by the Law on Public Information and Media (LPIM). Article 58 of the Law on Public Information and Media stipulates that a journalist is not obliged to reveal the source of information, except in exceptional cases strictly defined by law, when information about a serious criminal offense cannot be obtained in any other way.
December 25, 2025 – The Prosecutor’s Office ordered the police to question journalist Bokić about who provided him with the official police report, when he received it, whether he still possesses it, and, if the document was still in his possession, to instruct him to hand it over to the police.
After the questioning, Bokić stated that he perceived the prosecutor’s summons as pressure on the work of independent journalists. He said that during the police interview he refused to answer questions about his source of information, invoking the Law on Public Information and Media and the Code of Ethics of Journalists of Serbia, which stipulate that journalists are not obliged to reveal their sources. He added that such practice represents a dangerous precedent and a form of pressure on media freedom.
