Safety of Women Journalists and Media Workers – North Macedonia Brief 2025

Safety of Women Journalists and Media Workers – North Macedonia Brief 2025

This document follows the methodology of the Western Balkans regional network SafeJournalists, combining a review of relevant documents, qualitative analysis of interviews and a focus group, and thematic categorization of risks, forms of violence, institutional responses, and their effects on the work and wellbeing of women journalists.

This policy document represents an update to the comprehensive 2024 study “Challenges and Progress: The Safety of Women Journalists in North Macedonia.” While the 2024 report documented the initial impact of the 2023 amendments to the Criminal Code, this 2025 update focuses on the practical implementation of these legal guarantees in a context of intensified political processes and accelerated digital transformation.

The safety of women journalists is not merely a labor rights issue; it is a fundamental prerequisite for media pluralism and the democratic functioning of society.
