Freedom House said in its Freedom on the Net 2024 report that Serbia is one of just 19 countries which is ranked as free in terms of access to the Internet.
Serbia is ranked as free in terms of access to online content with a score of 70 of a possible 100 in the report.
The report warned that pro-government media outlets spread content that falsely accused the opposition of buying votes ahead of the December 2023 elections. It said that the reports in the pro-regime tabloid press were false and misleading information about the opposition and independent media and included a fake video purporting to show the political opposition buying votes.
According to the report, two of the eight possible threats to free access to online content were registered in Serbia: manipulation of information and physical threats to journalists and bloggers whose content is published online.
The Freedom on the Net 2024 report covered 72 countries in 6 regions with the ratings based on three broad categories: obstacles to access, limits on content and violations of user rights.
