The Croatian Journalists’ Association branch at Croatian Radiotelevision expresses shock that not a single word about the physical attack on the N1 television news crew in Zagreb was reported in HTV’s main news programme Dnevnik. We consider such an editorial omission to be an unprofessional, irresponsible and shameful act toward all journalists who work in the field every day, often in difficult and risky circumstances.
By remaining silent about a serious attack on journalists and a cameraman, HTV’s News Programme failed in its fundamental mission, timely, accurate and impartial public information, and further contributed to growing mistrust, divisions and tensions in society. Such editorial decisions do not “improve Croatia’s image”, but rather deliberately turn a blind eye to reality and weaken the position of journalists who carry out their work professionally.
The HND branch at HTV emphasises that public television is not, and must not be, an instrument of the authorities or an extension of any political structure, but a public service obliged to inform truthfully, responsibly and in the public interest.
As colleagues who share the field and daily tasks with the attacked journalists, we express sincere support for our colleagues from N1 Croatia and for all journalists who report professionally, courageously and responsibly despite pressures and threats. We reiterate and support the position of the HND headquarters, every attack on a journalist is an attack on democracy and on the public’s right to know.
