On 3 April, the RTV Podgorica portal reported that Prva Banka, whose largest shareholder is Aco Đukanović, brother of former President Milo Đukanović, had filed a lawsuit against the media outlet.
The lawsuit concerns an article titled “Central Bank Inspection: Aco Đukanović Sealed Off a Secret Passage from Private Premises to Prva Banka’s Vault”, published on 23 March.
In its claim, Prva Banka argues that the allegations regarding a secret passage constitute a “gross falsehood”. The bank further stated that “one can only imagine the consequences for a bank such as the plaintiff if claims are made that a third party, even if that person is the majority owner or shareholder, can access the bank vault at any time, as this would imply that an unauthorised individual could freely remove funds belonging to vault users.”
Prva Banka sought compensation for damages in the amount of EUR 7,000 and requested that the Basic Court prohibit RTV Podgorica from publishing media reports about the bank.
Prva Banka has filed several separate lawsuits against various media outlets, journalists and civil society organisations on the same grounds.
