Roundtable on the Safety of Journalists in Albania – Key Event and Speaker Announcement

The safety of journalists remains a cornerstone of a functioning democracy and Albania’s EU accession process. On 9th June 2025, a high-level roundtable titled “Advancing the Safety and Protection of Journalists in Albania – Sharing Best Practices and Addressing Ongoing Challenges” will take place in Tirana. The event aims to foster dialogue, collaboration, and actionable recommendations to strengthen media freedom and journalist protection in the country.

The roundtable is organized under the EU/CoE “PRO-FREX” action, part of the Horizontal Facility III for the Western Balkans and Türkiye, in cooperation with SCiDEV and ResPublica. It complements the efforts of the EU/CoE Media Dialogue Platform, which promotes long-term reforms in media freedom and includes a working group dedicated to journalists’ safety.

Key insights will be presented from the 2024 Journalists’ Safety Index for Albania and a policy assessment of the government’s commitments in the Rule of Law Roadmap, developed by SCiDEV in partnership with BIRN Albania, with support from the European Union.

We are pleased to announce that Tamara Filipovic Stevanovic, Coordinator of the SafeJournalists Network in the Western Balkans, will be the keynote speaker at the event.  This roundtable aims to translate research and dialogue into practical steps, helping align Albania with EU and Council of Europe standards on freedom of expression and the safety of media professionals.
