The Association of Journalists of Macedonia (AJM) strongly condemns the brutal attack that occurred yesterday in the newsroom of “Infomax” during a live broadcast, carried out by an unidentified individual, which endangered the safety of journalists Aleksandar Mitovski and Milosh Miloshevski, as well as other staff members in the newsroom.
According to information from colleagues at Infomax, the unidentified person arrived by taxi in front of the newsroom during the program. The attacker began aggressively banging on the entrance door, which was locked and secured with a code. Shortly thereafter, he managed to break it down by force and enter the yard of the newsroom. At the moment when the team took a break from the broadcast, journalist Milosh Miloshevski went out to check what was happening. The attacker then continued moving toward another part of the building, where he forcibly broke another door in an attempt to reach the studio.
According to colleagues’ testimonies, the individual made insults and death threats, and the violent intrusion into the newsroom led to the forced interruption of the broadcast, directly preventing journalists from carrying out their professional duties and freely informing the public.
Such conduct may fall under Article 382 of the Criminal Code – “Obstructing an official in the performance of official duties,” which предусматрива penalties of up to three years in prison, given that the attacker forcibly entered the studio, damaged inventory, and violently interrupted the work of journalists, thereby obstructing their obligation to inform freely.
This incident represents a serious violation of the safety of media workers and a direct attack on freedom of expression. The event once again reminds the public and institutions of the necessity to ensure a safe and secure working environment for the media.
We call for the strictest sanction against the perpetrator, in order to prevent future attacks and ensure zero tolerance for violence against journalists.
We expect all competent institutions, including the police and the prosecution, to act professionally, efficiently, and without delay, in order to fully resolve the case as soon as possible.
AJM will continue to closely monitor the case and will react whenever the safety of journalists and media workers is threatened.
