Women Journalists’ Safety: Albania Report 2024

The safety of women journalists in Albania remains a critical issue directly affecting women in media, with clear implications for media freedom, gender equality, and democratic integrity. Persistent, though often subtle, forms of pressure, intimidation, and threats, particularly digital harassment, verbal attacks, smear campaigns, and precarious working conditions, significantly restrict women’s journalistic freedom, professional advancement, and participation in the public sphere. Although physical threats and explicit dangers to life are relatively rare, the prevailing climate of intimidation considerably impacts their professional and personal lives.

Intersectional vulnerabilities, such as economic insecurity, geographic marginalization, and inadequate organizational support, intensify the risks for women journalists, particularly freelancers, those in smaller or independent media outlets, and those covering high-risk topics. Despite recent institutional improvements, substantial gaps remain, notably in law enforcement’s response to online threats, judicial capacity, enforcement of labor rights, and the provision of meaningful support by media organizations and journalists’ associations.

To address these critical issues, the report outlines targeted recommendations for public authorities, media outlets, journalists’ associations and unions, and civil society organizations. These include legal reforms to enhance protections against violence and abusive litigation, strengthening institutional responses and capacities, implementing clear editorial and anti-harassment policies, and improving support mechanisms for women journalists. This report emphasizes the urgency of systemic and coordinated responses to safeguard the rights and professional integrity of women journalists in Albania.

Published by the SafeJournalists Network, this report, authored by Blerjana Bino, provides a comprehensive analysis of the safety and professional challenges faced by women journalists in Albania between 2021 and 2024. The study is based on qualitative research, including in-depth interviews, focus groups, and analysis of documented threats and attacks against women journalists based on SJN’s established methodology. It provides a focused analysis of incidents, trends, impacts and proposes evidence-based recommendations to strengthen protective frameworks and practices, ensuring safer professional environments for women journalists and media workers.
