SafeJournalists Welcomes Inspectorate’s Response on Journalists’ Labor Rights Violations at ABC News Albania

Following a joint open letter of concern sent by SafeJournalists Network, the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), and EFJ affiliates in Albania regarding alleged threats and violations of journalists’ labor rights at ABC News Albania, Albania’s State Labor and Social Services Inspectorate conducted an official inspection and recently delivered its findings.

The Inspectorate confirmed breaches of Albania’s Labor Code by ABC News during a restructuring process. These violations include inadequate communication with employees about organizational changes, incorrect compensation for annual leave upon termination, improper handling of seniority allowances, and failing to adhere to legally required procedures for terminating contracts. Furthermore, the inspection highlighted that regional reporters lacked legally compliant employment contracts.

SafeJournalists appreciates the Inspectorate’s prompt and thorough response and welcomes the recommendation that affected journalists be formally invited to sign proper employment contracts. We remind all responsible institutions of their ongoing obligation to protect journalists’ labor rights, thereby safeguarding media freedom and professional integrity.

SafeJournalists will continue monitoring the implementation of corrective measures closely and will remain committed to advocating for improved labor conditions and journalists’ rights across Albania.
