This report builds on new empirical evidence stemming from population surveys, indepth interviews and other methods of data collection carried out between November 2019 and May 2020, as part of The Illiberal Turn project.

The report aims to contribute towards the development of media policies and journalistic practices designed to overcome the negative consequences of polarization and populism, while also enhancing media pluralism and rebuilding trust in journalism within a rapidly changing information environment.

The results and recommendations presented in this report are focused primarily on the new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) – Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Serbia – but they will also be of interest to anyone concerned about the role of the media in the challenges faced by contemporary democracies.
